start spreading the news, we’re leaving today!

Na 4 zalige dagen in “the city that never sleeps” staan we op het punt terug naar Belgie te vertrekken. Het is een ongelofelijke ervaring geweest. Er waren spannende momenten, stesserende momenten en momenten waar je kaken zeer deden van het lachen! Kortom, het was fantastisch.

Dank je wel iedereen voor de time of our lifes!

een kleine update over de trip van de jeugd.

In boston hebben we de trein van 7u gepakt en dus waren we vrij op tijd in New York. Ons hostel ligt wel in Brooklyn, dus we waren nog even onderweg.

Vandaag was al een drukke dag. Veel van midtown is gezien, zoals Rockefellar center en times square. (zie foto’s op de facebook groep) Vandaag zijn maxime en bart bekeerd tot het mac-geloof en hebben direkt een macbook pro gekocht.

’s avonds zijn Steven, BartB, Annelien, Didier en ik nog naar little italy en china town gegaan waar we vreemde tee met tapioca balletjes en sesam ijs hebben gegeten.

Bert is wel ziek, hij is wat grieperig, maar met wat koortswerende middelen gaat het wel.

Didier is nog niet van’t straat, maar heeft wel al veel Gossip Girl momenten achter de rug. (heel de tijd vind hij wel iets dat hij kent van Friends of Gossip Girl)

Maxime zit ons heel de tijd te filmen, wat waarschijnlijk wel leuke momenten oplevert.

Dus, kijk zeker op de facebook pagina, zou ik zeggen.

KULeuven heeft een gouden medaille in de wacht kunnen slepen, maar jammer genoeg geen speciale prijzen. De prijs voor best new natural biobrick is wel naar de ULB gegaan voor hun bacteriële lijm. Cambridge is de nieuwe winnaar van de jamboree.

The finalists are announced and are giving their presentations. Unfortunatly no KULeuven amongst the 6 finalists, but we are still hoping for a special prize for our poster, presentation or wiki!

At this very moment the whole team is assembled in the MIT Kresge auditorium waiting for the announcement of the finalists!

The room is slowly filling with people and the tension is rising! Fingers crossed!

The last minutes of the poster sessions have begun. It was (and still is for a few minutes) miraculous. Not only did the blue leds survive the whole afternoon, but we also managed to enchant multiple judges. The headjudge who came to visit us at noon, had spread the word. It is difficult to see our poster from a distance because the crowd gathers around it like it was Mona Lisa (with a vanilla scent). Luckily, everyone that did see it, agreed that it was so selfexplanatory that actually no further questions were necessary. Of course they did stay around to talk and congratulate us, but perhaps Marian’s and Annelien’s smile (Mona Lisa after all) had something to do with that. Or were it the Chokotoffs that melted the audience?

people are starting to find their way to our poster. As we type Marian + red wig is charming a fellow iGEMmer with her explanation. so who did we impress so far? well, We had some very friendly Taiwan folk coming over. they liked the wigs so much that they wanted our picture and they even gave us their business card (I know, they have business cards!).

more importantly, we have already had the opportunity to dazzle a judge with Essencia Coli. he liked the idea and we know for sure that our poster met up with his standards since Katrien had been so cunning as to ask him about that just moments before! way to go Katrien!

we also had a very interesting meeting with a camera crew that was making a documentary about the opensource idea behind iGEM. they where actually activists against pattenting genes and wanted to capture the openness and sharing that is iGEM. they filmed our movie star Marian while explaining our poster and asked us to send our animations! WE LOVE THEM!

so now we are of to the last presentations and then we will defend our poster with all our heart (and some chocotoffs).

Na een fantastische avond in het restaurant met lots of kreeft en serviettes was het tijd voor partyboys featuring <Partyanimal>. Dus we trokken naar Harvard square op zoek naar de big Halloween party. Snel vonden we (thx to the partynose) een birthday party met zowel bob  de bouwer, badman, elfjes en de romeinen als de voornaamste gasten. Partyanimal was niet gauw onder de indruk en snakte naar meer. Dat lieten de partyboys zich geen twee maal zeggen! En snel werd er snel contact gelegd met eine Heidy aus Tirol in ware croatian style. Zo kwamen we uninvited bij <the party of  Harvard> terecht.  Na enkele groovy beats, enkele try-outs of the clubbie  werd er  bier gehezen. Na enige tijd begon het partyanimal de eerste tekenen van barsten te vertonen of beter gezegd te plooien. Na een passage bij pizza pinokio, op aanraden van de plaatselijke mega mindy, werd er dramatisch op zoek gegaan naar een taxi!  Terwijl de ijverigste van de partyboys op zoek was naar nog meer feestjes verstreek de tijd en moest de partyanimal ei zo na gedragen door de twee sterkste, meest gespierde, adorabele en “man daar wil ik eens wild mee gaan” partyboys.  Uiteindelijk werd een taxi gevonden en werd deze ruige Harvardavond rustig afgesloten op de gang van het tweede in het rustige Kendall-hotel.

The Partycrew (part I …to be continued tonight!!!)

(Very) early this morning, the part of the poster-crew that managed to get out of bed headed for the number 49 board at Lobby 13. It didn’t take long before this place was turned into a vanilla-smelling blue light producing place. The 1st of November is supposed to be All Saint’s Day, but today it felt a bit like Christmas. Sparkling blue leds decorated the top of our fab poster and Bart Jobbs approved. The batteries were strapped around the back and Bart Jobbs approved. We were afraid that we would run out of battery support and Bart Jobbs… proposed to break into one of the MIT labs. You must understand, dear reader, since entering the metro without paying, Bart handles the law loosely. We (and the Boston Law Enforcement) are afraid that it won’t take long before Bart Jobbs will turn into Bart Without a Jobbs.

To return to lobby 13… it was no problem to lure the judges to our shiny poster, since Sigrid thought itwas a good idea to add a bit of fragrance to the number 49. The ink didn’t survive fully, but at least it smelled nice! (And personally, I think that people who come to visit won’t be bothered by mosquito’s which they will appreciate)

After the stress of the presentation was damped away, the sense of hunger returned.

As Boston is a harbor city, we went eating in a fish ‘restaurant’.

Me and others were so ‘drunk’ of tirement that we had a good laugh, although the food was of American quality.

Afterwards I had a good nights sleep, while others enjoyed the Harvard halloween night scene.
